BMSJ graduates are prepared for professional careers in digital media, television and radio, magazines, newspapers, entertainment media, social media, publishing, public relations and public information in a variety of commercial and non-profit settings. They also learn the writing and information-evaluation skills to find success in a variety of graduate and professional programs and non-media fields.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 2nd Class in S.S.C. and H.S.C. or a GPA of 2.50 or its equivalent with a total of 12 years education.
  • Any additional attainment above the minimum entry requirement may be credited to candidates’ accounts by the decision of the Academic Council.
  • At least one GPA 2.00 but aggregate GPA of 6.00 in O-Level (SSC) and A-Level (HSC) OR
  • Minimum Average GPA of 2.50 in 5 subjects in O-Level & 2.00 in 2 subjects in A-Level (using scale of A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1).

Other Conditions

  • Equivalent performance under other educational system (e.g. American High School Diploma, IB, etc.) will also be accepted.
  • A combined SAT score of 1100 also accepted in lieu of Admission Test for High School Graduates in any system.
  • The University will also accept non-degree admissions usually for exchange students.
  • Transfer of credits from comparable educational institutions will be considered after admission.
  • Students will have to pass an admission test to get admission to the University.

The degree or diploma obtained from home or abroad of any applicant for admission in the undergraduate and graduate or for other purposes will be referred to and resolved by the Academic Council.

Duration of the Program

Normally 4 years including period for internship/dissertation/project. However, students who have completed prior credits either from the BTEB, EDEXCEL (e.g. HND, ND, and other diplomas) , etc. may be entitled to course exemptions or credit transfer provided that evidence of completion of degrees or courses with satisfactory grades is provided and is approved by the Academic Council. This will enable students to finish the degree in less than four years period.

  • A combination of English and Bengali will be followed as media of instruction.
  • Distance learning of the program via affiliated centres and any other collaboration with institutes worldwide.
  • Online delivery of courses with the help of a web portal for students dispersed by distance.

Degree/Graduation Requirements

For the degree of Bachelor of Media Studies and Journalism, student will require to earn

  • 132 credit hours including internship (6 credit hours)
  • CGPA of 2.00 without ‘F’ in any course

A student with 12 years formal pre-University education (i.e. S.S.C. + H.S.C. or its equivalent) must earn a total of 138 credits including internship/dissertation/project. A minimum CGPA for graduation is 2.00 on a scale of 4.00 or any uniform system prescribed by the UGC. A student failing in any compulsory course will have to repeat the course.

The University follows the American System of Evaluation and Assessment prevalent in most North American universities and considers exemptions for prior credits earned by candidates beyond 12 years of education. Candidates with diploma or certificate from recognized award bodies such as the National Council for the Training of Journalists, etc. will have exception to completion of some of the credits for award of the Bachelors programme. Thus, the students will have the option of completing the degree program in less than four years time.
